ASL: The Beauty of Language and Culture

This program will take an interesting look at American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. Through the eyes of a native signer, the audience will tackle the ideas of Audism and Colonialism in respect to the Deaf Community along with American Sign Language components of storytelling, classifiers, semantics and numbers incorporation.

PRESENTER: DAMON JOHNSON
Damon Johnson, M.A., is an ASL Teacher and Deaf Mentor. He currently teaches at Chanhassen High School. His past teaching experiences include; Anoka Ramsey Community College, Anoka-Hennepin District #11 and Lakeville South High School. Damon has served as a board member with the MN Loon ASL Teachers Association for the last eight years. He has presented workshops on: "The Rainbow of GLOSS," "Familialism," and "Storytelling: The Key of Elements." He presented at the 2011 MRID Conference on "Subtle Changes Makes all the Difference: Dynamic Connotations of Semantics." He has a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Arts from Gallaudet University and a Masters Degree in Education from Capella University. He resides in the northern suburbs of Twin Cities with his wife and four children.
